The German Reading Room was opened in November 1993 at the initiative and with the support of the Goethe Institute (Munich). It is one of the first reading rooms in the world opened within the framework of the project «German reading rooms». The Goethe Institute aims to promote the culture of Germany and the study of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation. Tomsk State University (the Research Library) and the Goethe Institute signed an agreement according to which the Goethe Institute provided collections of books, video and audio materials, equipment and subscription to periodicals, while the Library provided the venue, furniture, staff, etc.

The German Reading Room focuses on spreading information about the culture, history, politics, economy and law of Germany. Currently, there are about 7 thousand books and language games in the stock. The collection includes books on various subject areas: history, philosophy, politics, art, literature studies, linguistics, natural sciences and others. But mainly it consists of modern textbooks from Germany and fiction books. The main criterion for selecting materials is their relevance.

The books are in open access. Everyone can work with them in the reading room; TSU staff members and students can borrow the books.

The room is booked for classes and events related to the German language and German-speaking countries.
