Happy holiday and see you in the Library! Research Library of TSU Historical reference* In 1910, Clara Zetkin, leader of the women's group of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, proposed establishing an international day of solidarity for working women in their struggle for rights. The date chosen was March 8, commemorating a protest held on that day in 1857 in New York City, where female garment workers marched to demand more rights and better opportunities. In 1977, the UN General Assembly officially established International Women's Day as a day marking the struggle for women’s rights and international peace. In Russia, International Women's Day is linked to demonstrations by working women in Petrograd on February 23 (March 8, New Style), 1917. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1965, March 8 was declared a non-working public holiday. *Based on materials from Ruwiki
